Best Kung Fu Style of Fighting?
blueangel asked:
Out of these five styles which would be the best for self defense?
-Chu Gar Southern Praying Mantis-
-ba gua-
-northern shaolin-
-hung gar-
-tai chi-
These styles seemed really interesting to try. I also go to college in Seattle, so there are a lot of muggers out here and I would like to be able to use one of these techniques in self defense.

Your best bet is Wing Chun Kung Fu. Its easy to learn and you don’t need a lot of strength. One who studied Wing Chun. It was started by a female monk in China many many moons ago. Also, Bruce Lee studied this art first before he devised Jeet Kon Do. Best of Luck to you young Grasshopper in whatever martial art you choose. I’m studying Grav Maga the Israeli Martial art.

Win Chun is the quickest and most powerful to learn.
The basic stances are the same. The implications are all that is different.

Personally, I’d say try either Wing Chun, San Shou or Jeet Kune Do. Bearing in mind you are in Seattle, which is where Bruce Lee first taught, it might be worth checking out any JKD in the area. Certainly it is far more street effective than any of the others.
Out of the list you mention,
Ba Gua is a soft art which is very beautiful and uses little power but instead, focuses on momentum through speed and angles however will take a long time to become street competent.
Northern Shaolin. Long Stances and strikes. Again very beautiful and using high kicks regularly. Will take even longer to become effective.
Tai Chi, good for health but unless it is taught in a combatitive sense, it will do very little if anything for you in terms of self defence.
Hung Gar is one of the most powerful and complex systems of kung fu. Again, self-defence wise, it will take a long time to reach a confident competence. This style, along with Northern Shaolin and Chu Gar Mantis include weapons training in tradition Chinese weaponry.
Chu Gar Mantis. Probably the most street effective of the arts mentioned. Being a Southern system, it is hand biased and uses sharp fast hand movements. As previously, it’s not an art which you will learn fast but IMHO it is the one out of the list which will benefit most.
That said, I maintain that JKD would be the optimum system for self defence (failing that Wing Chun, San Shou or (non-Chinese Krav Magda))
